Perhaps the Mets actually got something for Jose Reyes after all. When Reyes left as a free agent the Mets got a draft pick for him in 2012. That pick 35th overall became Purdue catcher Kevin Plawecki.
Plawecki came into the season as the Mets 17th best prospect according to Jonathan Mayo of mlb.com.
Plawecki, 22, appears to be turning some heads in the minor leagues.
The catcher is hitting .371/.421/.500 with seven extra-base hits and two walks in 19 games for High A Port St. Lucie after being promoted from Low A Savannah.
Overall Plawecki is hitting .327 with 7 homers with 61 RBI’s in 315 at bats in the minors this season. He has some pop and can take a walk but he is probably a little too aggressive for his own good right now.
Plawecki has been playing some first base recently but he is known as a very good defensive catcher with an average to below average throwing arm.
Even though Plawecki is behind Travis d’Arnaud on the organizations catching depth chart, I think he is probably the Mets 3rd or 4th best position player prospect behind d’Arnaud, Brandon Nimmo and Wilmer Flores.
This is a prospect that Met fans should keep an eye on.

Steve – So far everything that I have read or heard about Kevin Plawecki has been great. If d’Arnaod is a bust then who knows this may be our guy. The other names you mention Flores and Nimo are also the future for this ball club. I still remember when I was much younger listening with ethusiasm to Lindsey Nelson sing the praises of another minor league hopeful whose name happened to be Cleon Jones. There is always hope in baseball. Watching the Pirates beat the Mets the last two games in a way gives me hope that in relatively short order the Mets could be just like them. Mike
Mike it’s very encouraging to see a guy like Plawecki hit. Catching prospects are hard to find and now the mets have two of them. Ideally he continues to hit and can reach double AA next year. I don’t think it’s fair to call Travis d’Arnaud a bust (not yet anyway) but you can call him injury prone which is not a good trait for a catcher. D’Arnaud is still considered the top catching prospect in baseball throughout the industry and the mets need him to be their everyday catcher next season. Well wait and see.
