Former Met LaTroy Hawkins has signed a one year deal for $2.5 million with the Colorado Rockies. Hawkins had a stint with the Rockies in 2007. Hawkins will compete with Rex Brothers to be the Rockies closer. Brothers was outstanding as the Colorado closer last season.

The Mets were interested in bringing back Hawkins as insurance for Bobby Parnell who is recovering from neck surgery but he is going to Colorado. The Mets probably offered a deal similar to the Rockies but the appeal of potentially being the closer probably gave the Rockies the edge.

There are a lot of great relievers out there that will probably have to settle for 8th inning jobs. The Mets are going to need to land one. It would have been nice for the Mets to bring back the veteran Hawkins but there are still plenty of quality options available. That being said the Mets were probably better off matching the Rockies and giving Hawkins $2.5 million to be there insurance policy.

Well Steve now the Mets can cross La Rroy Hawkins of their shopping list. Too bad, I liked the way he pitched for us in 2013. Of course, he, like most BP pitchers his age would have still been a gamble at age 40. Hopefully Black in the 8th and Parnell closing works in 2014. I like Familia’s stuff but he needs to improve his command. Edgin is missing something because he is inconsistent. All we can do is continue to watch and wait. Hopefully, Sandy will know when to act and act quickly when ever the time comes. Mike

Mike the four guys you mentioned Black, Parnell, Edgin and Familia are all young guys coming into the season with serious question marks. Parnell with his neck surgery and the other three just not being used to the roles they will likely slide into. It would be very wise for Sandy Alderson to pick up a veteran or two for the pen. With so many bullpen arms available the Mets will be able to pick from a good crop later on this offseason on the cheap. Thanks for the comment!
