Why would the Mets move Tejada to second base?

The Mets have considered moving SS Ruben Tejada to second base, should they acquire a shortstop from outside the organization according to David Lennon of Newsday. This could mean a lot for 2B Daniel Murphy who could be moved during the Winter Meetings. Again this is just another article pointing to “we plan on shopping Murphy” that the Mets are throwing out there. For whatever reason, the Mets continue to think about moving their second basemen.

I simply don’t understand it. The Mets had two players who gave them league average offense or better in 2013, David Wright and Daniel Murphy. Murphy was top 5 in the National League in hits and had his best season defensively at second base. This is not the time to move him unless you can get a big package and that is very unlikely. He should make a little over $5 million in arbitration this winter before becoming a free agent after the 2015 season.

Murphy,28, had a career high 188 hits in 2013 to go along with a career high 23 stolen bases. He continues to thrive hitting second in the batting order.

I understand that if you sign a shortstop like Jhonny Peralta to pair up with Murphy the Mets middle infield defense would be very poor but this team simply needs hitters. There were just too many games last year where a pitcher went 7 innings giving up two or three runs and getting saddled with a loss.

Besides Ruben Tejada was horrific defensively last year, especially in April and May before he got sent down. If you are the Mets you can’t go into a season penciling in a player who hit .202 into your lineup every day with issues defensively. We already know about Terry Collins’ issues with Tejada.

Again this isn’t a done deal, it’s just something the Mets are considering.

I normally wouldn’t think much about this rumor Met fans but there have been so many about the Mets shopping Murphy that there is no reason to think this won’t be the year. The Mets don’t really have other options at second just yet as Tejada hasn’t shown he is more than just a utility player and Wilmer Flores didn’t hit at the major league level and most don’t believe he can handle second base defensively every day.
