The Mets should pursue Stephen Drew this winter

With a gaping hole at shortstop going into the winter, the Mets must address this position if they want to be a contender next year.

Stephen Drew should be one of the more appealing options at short in free agency. Drew, 30, is unlikely to go back to Boston with top prospect Xander Bogaerts ready to break out as an emerging star. Drew has hit a respectable triple slash line of .249/.331/.436 so far in 456 plate appearances for the Red Sox. That’s a significant upgrade over what the Mets were getting at short this season.

Perhaps more importantly Drew is a steady glove at short who can turn a double play perhaps as good as anyone in the American League. Besides having a cool first name, Drew will have plenty of suitors this winter in a very poor group of free agent shortstops. He should be able to get a multi-year deal in free agency and the Mets should sign him to fill their massive hole at short.

I’d rather go after Willie Bloomquist. He will be cheap, he’d love to be given a starting job, he can play a ton of positions, and he has a career .272 average (.314 in the past two years).

Josh, Willie Bloomquist is an interesting name, he has had a nice run the last few years with the Diamondbacks. However he will be 36 in November and he’s never really been an everyday guy before. Bloomquist has had more than 400 PA’s just once in his 12 year career. Plus most defensive metrics rate him very poorly. The Mets could use a utility guy and Bloomquist could be an affordable option there but the Mets need a better player to be their shortstop next seasom.

Steve – Without question the Mets need a SS ASAP. However, as I read your article I had a thought thar I didn’t like. In all liklyhood Derek Jeter will retire this off season. Thar means the NYY may be also looking for a SS. In the past, the NYY liked signing players that came up with their rivals, like rx-Mets and wx-Red Sox stars. So if the Mets want him and he is a REd Sox player he fits their signing proffile. I remember when Mike Mussina was a free agent. I really wanted Steve Phillips to sign him. We all remember who Mike Mussina signed with that year. Hopefully, the Mets can win this possible signing battle if it ever develops. Mike

Well I bet Drew will be a Yankee target this winter, he was last winter but Derek Jeter is not retiring this winter. He has a $9.5 million player option that will be exercised but the Yanks will look for shortstop help to push Jeter more into a DH role. The Yanks have bigger problems than shortstop though such as resigning Cano, Granderson and fixing a veteran pitching staff. Drew should have plenty of suitors but I don’t think the Yankees will break the bank for this veteran shortstop. Thanks for the comment Mike!
