The Mets have announced that they will call up top prospect, infielder Wilmer Flores. I say infielder because again, he doesn’t really have a position but he can hit. Flores was recently ranked as the Mets 4th best prospect by MLB.com.

Flores will wear #4 and bat sixth in tonight’s Met lineup vs. the Rockies. Flores will play third base, his most comfortable position. If he hits and doesn’t look awful in the field, it’s conceivable that the young infielder can play third for the next month until David Wright recovers from his hamstring injury.

Flores who when you get a look at him tonight, doesn’t look a day over 17 actually turns 22 today. Pretty sweet birthday gift.

It seems as if we have talked about Wilmer Flores forever, after all he did sign with the mets six years ago to the day.

I still believe Flores likely spends the bulk of his career on another team. His best position is third where he is blocked by Wright but he can hit and I can see him as a Billy Butler type DH in the American League so if he hits with the Mets he could be trade bait this winter as the Mets look for an outfielder.

If Flores hits like the Mets expect him to, some team will find a position for him to play.

Steve – Great move. Lets see what he can do as a major leaguer. Mike

Mike Flores was once the Mets #1 prospect and was compared to Miguel Cabrera. The power never really came like it did for Miggy but if Flores got 500 at bats I could see him hit 15 out. The question with Wilmer has always been where can he play defensively. He has played mostly second base this year but the Mets don’t think he can do that in the majors so well see how much he hits to offset that.
This is his shot now at third with Wright out.
