The Mets have placed closer Bobby Parnell on the 15 day Disabled List with a bulging disk in his neck. Parnell has had a breakout season as the team’s closer but this injury is considered serious.

Terry Collins has said that Parnell could be back when the disabled list trip is up in around 9 days since it is retroactive. However the Mets have not ruled out surgery here for Parnell either which would probably be a season ender.

The Mets will go closer by committee until Parnell returns. David Aardsma who has been solid in the Mets pen got the first chance Friday and blew the save. Saturday he gave up the go ahead run in the 12th inning in a Mets loss to the Royals. If the need arises because of his track record, I would assume Aardsma would get the chance again tonight vs. the Rockies.

It’s safe to say the Mets are a much better team with their closer and they need him back as soon as he is 100 percent.

Steve – Apparently, it is now official with Wright and Parnell both out at the same time and rookies being brpught up tp fill holes and the Mets seeing “what they have got” its that wait until next year time in the 2013 season. We just have to continue to be patient. What else can we do? Today I was thinking that I am so glad that when A Rod’s then agent Boras asked for his own private plane for road trips that Steve Phillips shut the door on him. That may have been the best move any Mets GM ever made. Lets beat the Rockies tonight and Lets Go Mets! Mike

Absolutely Mike the Mets are now 17 games out of first place and Wright and Parnell can be out a while. Why not go through some growing pains with Flores, d’Arnaud and den dekker? If not you are just going to have to deal with it next year when hopefully the Mets will be a more competitive, well rounded team.

As for Arod, with this being a Met blog I don’t get the opportunity to comment on more national healdines like all the drama surrounding Alex rodriguez and the yanks. It’s a disaster for the Yankees and it makes them look foolish when they probably didn’t do anything wrong other than sign him to that horrendous contract. For the most part 10 year deals don’t work out but I don’t think the Yankees or any other team like the Mets that were considering signing him expected anything like this to happen. look at Puljols in Anaheim on the 2nd year of a 10 year deal but this is a conversation for another day.

      Thanks for the comment Mike!
