Jordany Valdespin threw a tantrum in front of teammates at PNC Park after he was told by Terry Collins that he was being sent back to Triple-A according to multiple sources.

Collins told Valdespin (who is batting under .190) that he was being optioned to Las Vegas to make room for Scott Atchison over the weekend. Valdespin left the room without saying a word and then went on to trash the clubhouse included cursing under his breath.

Veteran players had to control Valdespin during the tirade in Pittsburgh.

Collins had to bring Valdespin to his office a second time just to calm him down.

The worst part of all of it was Sandy Alderson who was in the clubhouse witnessed the entire thing.imagesCAU5LIB3

Valdespin has been a major clubhouse problem since he came up to the big leagues last season. He really doesn’t have a position and lacks basic plate discipline that most big leaguers possess.

Valdespin hit some clutch pinch hit homers last season and had a great spring, earning his spot on the team but the utility man badly struggled this season and a demotion was inevitable.

The 25 year old Valdespin was hitting .188 with a .250 on base percentage and four homers in 66 games with the Mets this season.

I believe we have seen the last of Valdespin as a Met. His offensive production isn’t really major league caliber and the offseason distractions are just too much to overcome with this guy.

It definitely didn’t help that his boss Sandy Alderson witnessed the whole thing.

When Collins was the minor league coordinator with the Mets he had to suspend Valdespin multiple times in the minor leagues so this isn’t exactly out of the blue for the utility man. The Mets cant afford distractions like this as they look to make a push back toward .500.

Steve – This is a sad report. For Valdespin learning to act like a man is even more important than being on an MLB roster. He needed to be sent down. The team always comes first. He is not hitting and the Mets need Atchison in the BP. If he can’t fathom that then his days as a Met are now numbered. Too bad because he definetly has potential but he also definetly needs to grow up. MIke

Mike Valdespin definitely had potential but it seemed like he was never gonna be a solid big leaguer because of his attitude problems and his plate discipline issues. Apparently after his tantrum he demanded to be placed on the disabled list from Terry Collins. Collins went into the trainers office and asked if Valdespin had been in here within the last week they said no and he was sent down to AAA. I think we have seen the last of Jordany as a met. Thanks for the comment Mike!
