The Mets hope for internal reinforcements as they look to get back in the race. Jon Niese has begun long-tossing in Port St. Lucie, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Niese was diagnosed with a partially torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder three weeks ago, but doctors performed an MRI on his shoulder on Monday and cleared him to begin a throwing program.

Unless Niese suffers a setback he will NOT need surgery.

Niese is 3-6 with a 4.32 ERA in 14 starts in 2013.

The Mets need Niese to get back badly and be the player he was last season, his best statistical season in his big league career. Niese had a very serious injury so if he doesn’t have any setbacks (a big if) he could be back in a month.

Carlos Torres will get an extended look in the rotation until Niese comes back.
