In an article for the New York Daily News, Andy Martino talks about how the Mets are “monitoring” the situations of both Giancarlo Stanton and Carlos Gonzalez. One Mets person told Martino “there is heat there,” in regard to the team having a preliminary discussion with the Marlins about Stanton. Both are fantastic ball players on teams that aren’t expected to contend this year. (Or anytime soon)

Martino mentions how Sandy Alderson’s plan is similar to the successful plan of Frank Cashen in the 1980’s with the Mets. That plan was develop a lot of young players and then acquire established guys in the primes of their careers like Keith Hernandez and the late Gary Carter. That could be similar to what Sandy might be thinking with outfielders like Stanton and Cargo.

Now just because there is now reported interest in Stanton, doesn’t mean the Mets are going to acquire him. Far from it actually. 29 other teams are probably “monitoring” SimagesCAU5LIB3tanton.

I wrote about the possibility of the Mets adding Stanton in early January. You can find that article right here. Here’s a snippet of what I wrote on January 3rd. “Stanton would bring some credibility to the Mets but unless they were willing to give up Zack Wheeler, Travis d’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard they probably aren’t even in the conversation.”

That’s a lot to give up for a guy who is going to start to get expensive. I would probably still do that deal but keep in mind you will have to pay him.

Either player will probably be an offseason trade anyway.

I think Cargo would be the much better fit because he is already under long term control and would probably cost less to acquire. I wrote about the possibilty of the Mets adding him here.

Either way the Mets are almost in a position to acquire a premiere bat. I still think the Mets plan is to trade for a bat and sign a bat. That time is getting pretty close for Sandy Alderson. If there is any updates on these two players with the Mets, you know where to find it. Who do you think would be the better fit for the Mets?

  1. Michael Young says:

Steve – Giancarlo Stanton is a grat fit for any team. However, giving up all 3 young stud prospects d’Arnaud, Wheeler and Syndergaard is, in my opinion, far too much. So, for that reason and that reason only giving up obe of those three for Carlos Gonzalez would be the best deal for the Mets. ThHint the Mets nees Wheeler in their rotation yesterday. Mike

  2. Steven Inman says:

Yeah I’m with you Mike, to be honest I’d rather just give these kids a chance and sign a bat or two in free agency. And don’t worry Zack Wheelers chance is coming soon. Thanks for the comment Mike!
