The Mets shouldn’t give Aaron Laffey another start

In today’s walk off win against the Marlins, spot starter Aaron Laffey went 4 1/3rd giving up 3 runs on 10 hits. He was seemingly in trouble every inning against a below average Marlins lineup. The only person Laffey was able to consistently get out was Giancarlo Stanton, go figure. The Mets plan on giving Laffey another start but they have an off day Thursday so in theory they could skip him if they wanted too. The Mets shouldn’t skip Laffey, they should send him back to Triple AAA, as they have better options.

Collin McHugh, 25, looked decent in a brief September stint with the Mets last year. He also looked sharp in his first start of the year for Triple AAA Las Vegas. I believe he would be a better option as a spot starter than Laffey.

Also Aaron Harang was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. They now have 10 days to trade him or he will be a free agent. He would be a nice fit as a 5th starter coming off a decent year with the Dodgers in 2012. He could be had on the cheap. The Rockies who always seem desperate for pitching didn’t seem to be mildly interested in keeping Harang for some reason.

Both McHugh and Harang have far more upside than Laffey for the Mets rotation.

Steve – I agree with you. My vote is to sign Harang. We had a good look at Colin Mc Hugh last year and in ST. Except for his first start in 2012 he has shown me that he is very hittable by MLB hitters. Just my opinion – Thanks – Mike

  2. Steven Inman says:

Yeah Mike I agree with you Harang is cheap and easy to obtain. I have no idea why the Rockies with all their pitching problems wouldnt just stash this guy in their bullpen. The Rockies now have 10 days to trade Harang before they just release him. I think they could find a taker if they eat most of his money. Maybe thats the Mets… Thanks for the question Mike!

  3. Josh says:

I would go Laffey over McHugh, McHugh had a 7.59 ERA last year and a 9.64 Spring Training ERA.

    • Steven Inman says:

You know Josh, I think that’s what they plan on doing. They seen to want Laffey to fill in until Wheeler or Marcum are deemed ready to go. Thanks for the question Josh!
