The tale of “Captain America” will likely be put on hold indefinitely with Mets 3B David Wright likely out for the rest of the World Baseball classic with a rib cage injury. Wright is heading back to New York to get checked out by Mets team doctors. Thursday night Willie Bloomquist started at third for Wright down in Miami.  As a result the “Wrightless” U.S.A. team lost to the Dominican Republic 3-1. More importantly though Wright could be hurt as rib cage injuries can linger. Wright later spoke with reporters and said doctors from both the Mets and Team USA decided to keep him out of the lineup since he’d been dealing with the discomfort for the past 10 days.

The most important thing for the Mets is to get their star third basement healthy before opening day. Opening Day is now 17 days away but as of now Wright doesn’t think the injury is too serious. Candidates to replace Wright on the United States roster are Padres 3B Chase Headley and 3B David Freese. David Wright was hitting .438 with 10 runs batted in and a homer for America in the World Baseball Classic.
