Johan Santana still isn’t close to pitching in a game and Terry Collins said today that Jon Niese would be the alternative if Santana isn’t ready to pitch against the Padres on Opening Day. Santana is throwing from around 120 feet and hopes to throw from about 180 feet before coming into a game sometime in the next 10-14 days. The target date has been March 11th to get Santana into a game. Santana isn’t actually experiencing any pain but is having trouble generating arm strength.

As of now if Santana gets into a game on March 11th he has a shot at 4-5 starts if he has no more setbacks. That being said it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for the Mets if Niese pitches Opening Day and Santana pitches later that week. The goal is to get Santana 30 starts, it doesn’t really matter what day they come. Niese is more than capable of pitching Opening Day for the Mets.
