The Mets are thinking internally about bringing Daiskue Matsuzaka to camp on a non-guaranteed minor league deal according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Mets, Marlins, Indians and Astros have all shown some interest in Dice-K this offseason. If Dice-K doesn’t think he has a good chance of making a 25 man roster he will likely go back to Japan.

Dice-K, 32, has struggled badly with the Red Sox over the last few years. He gives up way too many homeruns. He hasn’t been effective since 2008. Matsuzaka had an earned run average of over eight last year and has imagesCADQ3WP8pitched less than a combined 90 innings over the past two years as a starting pitcher. Also the Mets probably only have interest in Dice-K as a long reliever but Matsuzaka has only pitched one game in relief throughout his whole career in the United States.

At this point in his career is it probably best for Matsuzaka to go back to Japan but if he wants to come to camp with the Mets and compete with Jeremy Hefner and Aaron Laffey as the long man then he is welcome to do it. That being said I can’t see Matsuzaka signing with a major league team without thinking he will make someone’s team in a prominent role.
