A few moments ago the Mets announced that they avoided salary arbitration with reliever Bobby Parnell. Parnell, 28, is set to earn $1.7 million with the Mets in 2013. Parnell is under team control through the 2015 season. The Mets still have to agree to deals with Ike Davis and Daniel Murphy.

Parnell had his best season as a major leaguer in 2012 and will be relied on heavily with the Mets, even if they bring in more bullpen help. In 74 games with the Mets last season, Parnell had a 2.49 earned run average and 61 strikeouts in 68 2/3rds innings. Parnell was expected to receive a salary in the $1.5 million range according to mlbtraderumors so the Mets didn’t seem to overpay much here for their hard throwing right-hander.
