The Mets have resigned former Met Omar Quintanilla to a minor league deal according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Quintanilla will compete for the backup middle infield job with Brandon Hicks in Spring Training. Rubin notes that Quintanilla would be the underdog in that fight being on a minor league deal. That means the Mets can send him down to the minor leagues out of Spring Training without risk of losing him, unlike Hicks.

Quintanilla, 31, hit a combined .243 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 169 at-bats for the Mets and Orioles in 2012. The Mets traded Quintanilla to the Orioles last July after they designated him for assignment. That meant a national league club would have first priority to claim him from the Mets. The Mets were afraid of losing him to rival Atlanta who needed a shortstop at the time.  The Mets regretted dealing their backup shortstop so it’s no surprise they are bringing him back on this minor league deal.
