According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Mets have upped their offer for R.A. Dickey. It is still a two year deal and from Buster Olney’s report, it probably isn’t enough to get a deal done. Olney also writes that the Mets were angry that Yankees P Andy Pettitte got a $12 million contract with the Yankees. Pettitte is even older than Dickey so if Pettitte after coming off a season where he made 12 starts is getting $12 million how can the Mets justify giving Dickey less? Dickey is coming off a season in which he won the Cy Young award and deserves to be paid.

images2Dickey plans on meeting with Sandy Alderson next week in Tennessee to talk about his future in hopes of getting a contract extension. Both Dickey and his agent live in Nashville.

I still believe it is in the Mets best interest to trade R.A. Dickey. The Royals are interested and if the Mets could find a way to get Wil Myers, I would do that deal immediately. The Blue Jays, who are looking for one more pitcher, don’t have that much interest in Dickey but they covet Jon Niese. The Mets thought they had a deal involving Niese and Blue Jays top prospect Travis d’Arnaud nearly done last offseason. Niese is coming off his best season so maybe the two sides revisit the deal during the Winter Meetings next week.

  1. J. says:

I wouldn’t do Niese for d’Arnaud (or for anyone short of Will Myers). Niese, as you said, is coming off his best year, and if he can continue to pitch like he pitched last year, his contract – which runs through 2018, and averages out at just more than $5 million a year – will be one of the biggest bargains in baseball. Why would we ever let that go?

  2. Steven Inman says:

Always appreciate the feedback J. I think the Mets need to move one of Niese or Dickey and from what I understand the Mets arent confident they can get that big cheap bat for Dickey. They can for Niese. If they could get Myers for Dickey I would do that but I’m not confident they can get him yet. Thanks!
